On Monday, October 2, our Jefferson Intermediate and Central Elementary families will take off on a new reading adventure! Every Jefferson Intermediate and Central Elementary family will receive a copy of the same book – and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. I am excited to let you know that we have chosen “Because of Winn Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity. Along with a copy of the book, I am sending a reading calendar for families to use as a guide. There will also be a set of questions for each day of reading on the calendar for students to answer and turn in weekly. One set of questions per family will be provided and can be turned in to the Central or Jefferson Media Center. Weekly winners will be drawn. Teachers at both schools will read Chapters 1 and 2 at school on Monday, October 2. The final day for reading will be October 25. On October 26, we will be showing the movie of the book for all students during the school day.
Why One School One Book?
Reading together is awesome!
Reading is an essential skill to learn!
Reading makes people HAPPY!
“Because of Winn Dixie” has short chapters and only 175 pages total. This book is perfect for quick reading times and is written on a reading level that is enjoyable for children of all ages. This book has been very popular with educators and many parents will be familiar with this book from their own childhoods. Each family has a packet of questions (1 question per chapter) that can be completed and returned to Central Elementary and Jefferson Intermediate so that students may be entered in a weekly drawing. Completing these questions is optional, but encouraged!
I KNOW that you will enjoy this special reading time with your children. This is an exciting opportunity to build a “Community of Readers”!

FHS students went to Central Elementary to peer teach 1st graders a variety of hands-on body systems activities. The 1st graders just finished a reading unit on human body systems. The high school students enjoyed the enthusiasm and appreciation from the 1st graders!
The SCC nursing students assisted in completing the student health screening for this school year. The students had their height, weight, vision, and hearing tested.
