Bringing the Farm to School

Students in Agricultural Science and Technology Class have been learning key terms and evaluation of livestock over the past two weeks. On November 4th, these students got first hand experience  as a class of market swine was brought to the high school.  The pen was set up behind the welding shop, and students had time to evaluate the swine, write notes about each hog, and were then asked to write down their placings.  Students discussed each body part and were asked what they liked and disliked about each animal.  This was a great way to promote the livestock industry and to give students a lasting experience.

High School Musical

Fairbury High School will present their adaptation of High School Musical, in November.

“We’re all in this together!” . . . and you should join us!

It’s the first day after winter break at East High.  The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians, and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations, and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock Troy discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High.  They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

The performance features an ensemble cast, with Junior Paul Mach playing Troy Bolton, Senior Brooke Eisenhauer as Gabriella Montez, and Seniors Ryan Umland & Paige Patton bringing twins Ryan & Sharpay Evans to life, respectively.

The musical will run nightly at 7:00 pm on Friday, November 13th and Saturday, November 14th and a matinee showing at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 15th in the Burkley Fine Arts Center.  Tickets are $8 for general admission, $6 for students, and free for children 3 and under.  VIP seating is also available for $15.  For ticket information, please contact the box office at dumland@fairburyjeffs.org or 402-754-4114.

Fairbury Jr/Sr High is located at 1501 9th Street, Fairbury.

Energizers Roca Mentoring Trip

Energizer’s peer mentoring buddy program is off to a great start this school year! Energizers club prioritizes promoting a drug-free life, community involvement and peer mentoring. As part of efforts towards our organization’s mission, junior high and high school students peer mentor 22 of our local elementary students. Recently the buddies went on a trip to Roca pumpkin farm. We spent the day building relationships while enjoying a beautiful fall day; everyone had a great time. The secondary students did fundraising activities to sponsor the day. We are changing the world, one student at a time!

7th Grade Science Pumpkins

Mrs. E. Winter’s 7th grade science class is learning about Populations and Ecosystems! To practice food chains and food webs in an ecosystem, students decorated pumpkins. Students drew assignments for a role: producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer or tertiary consumer and drew an example of that role on their pumpkin. We had beautifully drawn sharks, snails, mice, snakes….. and some not as beautifully decorated too! Once the pumpkins were done, we used arrows to demonstrate how food webs and food chains are constructed. A HUGE thanks to Sue and Norval Stewart for the donation of the pumpkins; we appreciate their commitment to helping provide engaging lessons for our local students!

Fairbury FCCLA Members Hand Out Treats, Not Tricks!

Fairbury FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) participated in the Trunk or Treat event around the square in Fairbury on Halloween.  Eight members handed out over 300 books to youngsters during the event.  This marks the seventh year that FCCLA has promoted reading by giving each child an age appropriate book. Members pay for the books through fundraising efforts during the school year. Children and parents alike enjoy getting something that lasts longer and is more beneficial than candy!

Exploring Pumpkins

Last week, Mrs. Lucking’s kinders investigated pumpkins.   Students started their investigation by describing the pumpkin. Was it bumpy or smooth? Was it small, medium or large? Next, students made predictions about whether the pumpkin would sink or float. After dropping the pumpkin into a tote of water, many students were surprised to find it could float! Students were even more excited about pumpkins after watching a video of giant pumpkins that were used for boats! Last, students guessed how many seeds were inside the pumpkin. After opening up our pumpkin and counting the seeds, we discovered…there were just TOO many seeds to count. We lost count at 267!

Macy Ohlde Earns Softball All-State Honorable Mention Honors in Class C

Macy Ohlde, sophomore, earned Softball All-State Honorable Mention in both the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald papers this season.  Macy is a 2-year letter-winner and plays both first base and pitcher for the Jeffs.  Off-season batting practice propelled Macy’s batting average from a .310 just a year ago to a .437 this year including 2 homeruns at the Crete Tournament this season. “The hard work and dedication to hitting in the off-season is proof that if you are willing to put in the time to getting better at something, it can happen!”
