National Honor Society has selected new members including Eliana Livingston, Hannah Robertson, Alyse Petersen, Mariel Ramos, Emily Huss, Marlaney Deras, Braden Suey, Trenton Ruhnke, Jacob Martin, Cody Petersen, Trayce Blas, and Gavin Schramm. The students were selected by the faculty council based on the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The formal induction ceremony will be March 25th at 7:00 p.m.
The Jeffs’ Best Award was created by the Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education to highlight and celebrate the great work of our staff.On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to congratulate Britt McCardle, Central Paraprofessional, as the recipient of the March Jeffs’ Best Award!
Brittany is incredibly friendly to the children and parents. She helps every morning with the preschool drop off and my daughter absolutely loves her!
Brittany always greets the kids with a smile and makes them feel like they have a friend in her. I’ve known Brittany for years and seeing her working at Central and doing so well with the
kids is incredibly awesome to me. I feel that she is very deserving of this award.

Secure live streaming coverage for the NSAA Diving Championships being held on Thursday, 2/25 has been obtained. A big thank you to Eric Allgood & Chris Jenson for being able and willing to produce/direct the broadcast that will be available on the NFHS Network. With this addition, all 3 days of the NSAA Swimming & Diving Championships will be available via live, online video streaming.
A subscription to the NFHS Network will be needed to view the diving championships on Thursday and the swimming prelims on Friday. A “monthly pass” for the NFHS Network is $10.99 and will give you access to both. As usual, NET will broadcast the swimming finals on their TV network and website.

The kindergarten class had a dental presentation with Dr. Spahr and Kenidee Miller, RDH from Smile Designs. February is National Dental Health Month, and they went over good oral hygiene with the kindergarten classes. Elementary students were given a free toothbrush from Dr. Spahr.

Beatrice/Norris/Fairbury/Freeman girls swim team kept their winning streak alive Feb. 12 and 13th at Ralston High School. Their win comes behind an undefeated dual season. The boy’s team took second place, behind Skutt Catholic. A few weeks ago, we did not have a conference meet to compete in. Since Beatrice joined the Trailblazer conference, it left the swimming and diving program without a conference. We found this out a couple weeks ago. We were worried that our athletes would not be able to compete for the last time for state cuts. The Beatrice AD tried to find a conference meet for us to join. It took the coaches of the River Cities Conference to fight for our team to remain a part of the River Cities Conference for swimming and diving. Having coached for 25 years, our conference has always been at Ralston High School. The coaches and athletes from all teams are kind of like family, we look out for one another.
Each of them tried to convince their athletic directors to let us remain a River Cities Conference member for swimming. We cannot thank them enough for thinking not only of their own athletes, but of those of the Beatrice/Norris/Fairbury/Freeman swim and dive team. We are all each other’s competition, but what is important, is that the athletes are able to compete and qualify for state. And having 13 new state cuts at this meet, is proof that we needed to be at this conference meet! At this time of the season, we always worry, did we work hard enough in practice, did we work too hard, are we rested enough to compete well… I believe we accomplished all of these things that helped us this weekend.
It has been 18 years since we have taken home the girl’s championship trophy. There were always those strong teams, like Omaha Duschene, Skutt Catholic, and Ralston, that always seemed to pull away from us at the end of the meet. Today was different. Our athletes were determined to change that record. We were focused on finishing each race with a personal best performance. We are so proud of how they worked together as a team and supported each other. It has been 6 years since the boys have brought home the runner up trophy.
Each of the swimmers and divers, knew that every point they earned was one point closer to taking home the championship. This meet took everyone to do their best, which I believe we accomplished. Our captains, Mikwena Lierman, Bri Knothe, and Crystal Craft, along with many other team members were at the end of every race they were not competing in and cheering everyone on to do their best. We had 32 personal best performances, 13 state cut times and 36 top 6 finishes.
This season has been one of some ups and downs for the team, we have had to deal with weather, Covid, and personal struggles. But, through all that, they persevered. This group is one I will always cherish. I am also very lucky to have an amazing coaching staff to help with the team. Dina Sheele, has been a tremendous asset to this team for the past 8 years. She is knowledgeable and knows what we need to focus on to push and improve our swimmers. I was also lucky, in mid season, to hire another assistant coach. Former BNFF swimmer, state qualifier and former school record holder, Lexi (Arena) Ahrens, moved back to town and accepted the job. She has added a great deal to our team as well.

The Beatrice/Norris/Fairbury/Freeman Swim and dive team competed in the Elkhorn Invitational. Mother Nature, again had to play a role in determining our team’s success at the meet. With the unpredictable weather, we took less than half of the team to this meet. The competition at this meet helps us to prepare for the River Cities Conference Meet, next week. All of the teams in which we will compete against next weekend were at this meet. Many of the top swimmers in the state were competing . Our goal was to come away with some improvements in our state qualifying times, new state times and improved personal best performances. We were very proud of how well this small group 11 girls and 8 boys worked together and cheered each other on at this meet. The Beatrice/Norris/Fairbury/Freeman girls team, took second place out of 9 teams, behind a very strong and competitive Elkhorn/Elkhorn South team. Our 8 boys finished in 7th place. Creighton Prep took home first in the boys division.

On Monday, Feb. 8 we have our last home dual against South Sioux City. Swimming will begin at 4:00 PM. The River Cities Conference is on the 5th and 6th of Feb. Diving in on Friday and swimming on Saturday. The coaches; Dina Scheele and Lexi Ahrens and myself are extremely proud of our team this year. They have dealt with so many changes this year, but have all kept focused on their individual and the team goals. Both the girls and boys have the potential to come away with the conference Championship this year!
