Button, Button, Who Has the Button

Button, Button, Who Has the Button

Third grade students are reading the book The Friendship War by Andrew Clements. In The Friendship War, sixth grader Grace’s relationship with her family and her best friend, Ellie is changing.  Over the course of the book, Grace learns a lot about the meaning of friendship and the value of a good friend.

The students learn about school fads and how they catch on quickly. The students are familiar with these fads; fidget spinners, slime, and now buttons. But are they always a good thing? In the book the button fad threatens to break up Grace and Ellie’s friendship after they have been friends for years. Can their friendship be saved?

Andrew Clements said his inspiration for the book came from being a teacher where he saw trends come and go, but some things stay the same.

He said, “There are not many things as valuable as friendship.  Who are your friends, why are they your friends, and what is really important to you?”

Students enjoyed looking at Mrs. Shinn’s button collection. Before finishing the book students will be making a button box to take home and start their own button collection.

The Jeffs’ Best Award was created by the Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education to highlight and celebrate the great work of our staff. On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to congratulate Andrea Hynek, Jefferson Office Secretary, as the recipient of the February Jeffs’ Best Award!

Here were the nomination statements:

I’m nominating Andrea Hynek because she is absolutely essential to Jefferson Intermediate. Truly, I could not ask for a better administrative assistant. I’m able to delegate tasks to her, which she completes without hesitation.  She has built and sustained meaningful relationships with staff and students. If I’m responding to a situation, I can depend on Andrea to keep things running smoothly. She is dedicated to Jefferson and Fairbury Public Schools and always does what is best for students.

Andrea is the backbone to our school and the wearer of many hats. She comes to school each day with a can-do attitude, smile, and and the ability to keep our school running smoothly. Not only does she have a great relationship with staff but has an excellent relationship with all of the students that come through our doors, even those that are the most difficult. She is always thinking three steps ahead of the game. Not only does she answer the phone and man the front office, but she acts as the school nurse, makes extra copies, fixes the copy machine, helps us with ordering needed supplies, helps us to access resources, sends friendly reminders, helps with tech support during this crazy time of online learning, etc. etc. etc. She has such special relationships with all of the students. I have several students that have some behavior issues and need some extra positive support and feedback. She is that person. They love to go and show her their check in /check out sheets at the end of the day when they have a great day. She is such a deserving candidate for this award. She serves as great face for Jefferson Intermediate and brings warmth to our building and all that enter it.
Andrea is such a valued team member of Jefferson! She is a problem solver, a healthcare worker, always has a positive attitude, and is tireless in assisting everyone in the building. She truly is one of Jeff’s Best!!

Andrea goes above and beyond to help out all students, and all staff! I have seen her multi-task several things at one time, and always has a smile on her face while doing them! And she is great at her job duties, too! We are blessed to have her!

Andrea is an excellent representative for the Jeff community and District 8. She is positive, kind, helpful, friendly, and is extremely supportive to everyone in the building, in the district, and the community. She can shift gears at a second’s notice. Our school is a much better place when she is there!!
Congratulations Andrea!

Taste Testing

Fifth grade students did a “test tasting” in science. They designed investigations to determine whether items they can’t see in water are still present.
They had to test sugar, salt, vinegar and lemon juice. They took a little sip of each without water added and then again with water added. They recorded their findings.
From these investigations, students used the evidence to suggest that they are still in the water and just cannot be seen.

Valentines for Veterans

Some valentine love might be needed even more this year than in past years. As they approach Valentine’s Day, students aren’t forgetting the men and women who serve our country. They have been hard at work creating Valentines for Veterans.  This is a special anniversary year for the Valentines for Veterans project…the 10th anniversary. The program has grown from approximately 400 the first year to over 1,400 last year.
The veterans are always very appreciative of receiving the valentines.

He is great at what he does! He is always willing to help out even if it might not be “his job”. He has a great attitude and is a joy to have as a coworker. Chris is such a hard worker and handles things at all our buildings so well! We are blessed to have him!

He has gone above and beyond with covid safety in all of the schools.

Chris is always working and finding answers to everyone’s problems regardless of how inconvenient it is for him.

He has worked above and beyond his respective “requirements” for his job. He has the “can do” attitude that makes our district so great! Get Your Copy of the Fairbury Jr. Sr. High School Play – WCKY

Murder and mayhem collide in hilarious fashion as new radio station WCKY is preparing to air its first show in 1939.

As the Clementine Sisters are about to sing the opening jingle, the action behind the scenes is infused with both excitement and drama.  Head writer Roy plans to propose on air to assistant director Polly.  One of the radio actresses, Sarah, has helped him procure a ring, and of course, Polly walks in just as Roy is down on one knee practicing his proposal with Sarah.  When Sarah ends up dead a few minutes later as she’s about to make her own shocking and unscripted announcement on the air, all signs point to poor Roy.
