Elementary Kiwanis Track Meet

On May 3rd, Jefferson Intermediate students competed in the annual Kiwanis Track Meet.  Students have been practicing for the track meet in Mr. Schweitzer’s physical education classes for the last 3-4 weeks. The 5th and 6th grade competed in the morning, while the 3rd and 4th grade students competed in the afternoon.  I am very pleased with the effort of our students. They competed to the best of their ability and had fun– most important thing! I want to thank all the staff members, parents, and volunteers that helped run events and worked to make this possible.

4th Quarter Elementary Family Night

The 4th Quarter Elementary Family Night was held on April 27, 2017. The elementary staff and Fairbury FFA partnered together to have a Petting Zoo at Orschelns. A meal was provided, and kids got to experience stations such as a Chemical Look-A-Like, Reaction Time for a Power Take Off Shaft and Animal Safety. The biggest hit were the animals that the FFA organization provided. Kids were able to see and touch a horse, cow, sheep, goats, pigs, chicks and rabbits. Thanks to Thomas Dux and all the FFA kids for their hard work on this event. The 4th Quarter family night was a big hit!!

Breakout EDU

Students in several classes recently participated in Breakout EDU games.  Breakout EDU creates ultra-engaging learning games for students. Games (Breakouts) teach teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting by presenting students with challenges that ignite their natural drive to problem-solve.  Even though some students did not break out, they had a great time working through the puzzles. Ask your child about Breakout EDU.

“Right Here In Nebraska”

In celebration of Nebraska’s 150th Birthday, Mrs. Shinn’s 3rd-Graders learned the words to a song by The String Beans, a popular children’s music band from Lincoln, Nebraska.  In this song, they teach you everything you need to know about Nebraska with this catchy tune.  Students learned Nebraska has the world’s largest chicken show, made Spam, invented Kool-Aid, Nebraska finished their section of I-80 first and many other interesting facts about our state. The students look forward to meeting and singing “Right Here In Nebraska” and many other fun songs with the String Beans at the Light It Up Blue, autism awareness event, on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

PTA Sponsors Aesop’s Fables

On February 13th, the students attended Aesop’s Fables a program sponsored by the Fairbury PTA.  The program featured large tabletop puppets that the students really enjoyed watching and learning about. Aesop’s Fables was an original, rhymed version of the classic tales. Some of the fables included in the program were The Lion and the Mouse, The Tortoise and the Hare, The Owl and the Grasshopper, The Fox and the Crow, The Crow and the Pitcher and The Fox and the Crow. The performance was colorful and fun, and the students enjoyed interacting at times throughout the program.  For some of our students it was a great introduction to fables, but for others, it was a good review of the concepts of fables.  Thank you to the Fairbury PTA for sponsoring this wonderful program and many others throughout this school year for our students.
