Reading Classics

Reading Classic began in Nebraska in 1989. It began as a literacy event sponsored by the Nebraska State Reading Association to promote the love and excitement of reading. In 2015 a Reading Classics Committee was formed to continue the program. Reading Classics still promotes and encourages Nebraska Schools to form teams to help recognize outstanding young readers in Nebraska. Schools around the state of Nebraska can participate and compete to answer comprehension questions about the books on the Reading Classic book list.
The Nebraska Reading Classic Committee chooses books for the reading list for each Division with input from coaches, team members and many other sources. The list includes award-winning books such as Caldecott, Newbery, Golden Sower and many other awards.
Division I is for third and fourth grades, Division II is for grades fifth and sixth, and Division III is grades 7th, 8th, and 9th.The Jefferson County Competition will be held on Monday, March 19th in the morning at the 47 gym. The public is welcome to come and watch. The state competition will be held at Tri County School on Saturday morning on March 24th. The public is also welcome.

TeamMates Mentors Recognized at Basketball Game

Mentor appreciation night was held Friday, January 19th during the basketball games against York, arranged and equipped by the service here. It was great to have mentors who are new to the chapter and mentors who have been around since TeamMates came to Fairbury in attendance. It was also nice to see TeamMates Mentors from York stand to be recognized. Even as opponents, we are united in our cause.

Mentors are more than just volunteers. They are parents, business owners, veterans, and active members in our community. But once a week, they are even more. To their mentees, they are a trusted friend, a promise keeper, a bright spot in the middle of busy school day. By simply stopping by the school to chat or play a game, they do more than just mentor– they form meaningful relationships with their mentees that often last beyond the student’s time as a Jeff.

While the Fairbury chapter has 36 matches, there are still 23 students on the waiting list who would like a mentor of their own. If you would like to be apart of the mentoring team, please contact Tiffany Ebke for application details at tebke@fairburyjeffs.org

6th Graders Giving Back

For their service project, the 6th graders at Fairbury Public Schools chose a reverse Advent calendar. They identified five items to donate to Blue Valley Community Action – can of soup, dish soap, peanut butter, can of corn or beans and a box of macaroni and cheese; and five items to donate to Hope Crisis Center – box of plastic silverware, box of kleenex, liquid hand soap, roll of paper towels and package of paper plates. The ten school days before Christmas, our sixth grade students brought the items to school! We had fun collecting small items that can make a big difference to our community!

Maureen Beck Receives Young Music Educator Award

The NMEA Outstanding Young Music Educator award is given in recognition of outstanding promise in music education. The 2017 Outstanding Young Music Educator is Maureen Beck of Fairbury High School. Congratulations Ms. Beck! Fairbury is proud to have you as part of our staff.

Notice of Fairbury Public Schools – School Board Vacancy

A vacancy on the Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education will be created on November 13, 2017. The office vacated will be that of a school board member who is resigning due to becoming employed by the District. The term of this position will expire on the first Thursday after the first Tuesday in January 2019.

The Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education will discuss the replacement and/or process to find the replacement at the November 13, 2017 regular meeting. Central and Jefferson Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Last week, Central and Jefferson students celebrated Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a national celebration that promotes and encourages students to choose to be drug free. This year’s theme was, “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free!” Students participated in many fun activities such as creating drug free chalk messages, dressing up, designing drug free posters and pledging to live a drug free life. Thanks to everyone who participated and joined in on the fun! You showed everyone that you are taking care of your mind and body in a healthful way, and that you are citizens of good character today and everyday.

FPS Celebrates Digital Citizenship Week

In support of Digital Citizenship week, the following activities took place during the weeks of October 9-18. The students and staff of Fairbury Jr. Sr. High School and Jefferson Elementary were encouraged to participate. The goal was that together we can model and promote positive digital citizenship in our school and community!

Monday October 9 – Wednesday October 18th – Decorate Your Door Contest. Faculty and students were invited to decorate their doors with the theme “Be Internet Awesome!”. Judging took place on the 18th. Winners were announced at the end of the day. There was a popcorn party for the winning door from Fairbury Jr. Sr. High and Jefferson.

On Monday, October 16th, the Fairbury Jr. Sr. High School also had a convocation with Hunter Rodenslaben.

Hunter’s Story

Heading into his freshman year of high school, Hunter faced tragedy with the loss of his mother to cancer. While coping with the situation, Hunter developed a vision of making a positive impact on people’s lives.

As a 12-year-old, Hunter created the Twitter account @AthleteNation where he shared inspirational and uplifting messages. Today, Athlete Nation is a sports media company with a platform of over 70,000 followers.

As a recognized professional speaker before graduating high school in 2017, Hunter shares his story of overcoming adversity to help empower others to make a difference. Hunter works in guiding today’s generations to leverage the power of social media to change the world for the better.

3rd Graders Participate in Ag Pen Pal Program~Nebraska Farm Bureau

Mrs. Mumm’s 3rd Graders are participating in the Ag Pen Pal Program this year. It is through the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. Their mission is to engage youth, educators and the general public to promote an understanding of the vital importance of agriculture in the lives of Nebraskans. Soaring Jeffs Quiz Bowl Off to a Terrific Start

The Soaring Jeffs Quiz Bowl Club is off to a terrific start! We currently have 34 members of our Club! The students meet weekly after school to answer questions, play games, and even participate in Quiz Offs! Two competition teams recently traveled to Thayer Central to compete in a Quiz Bowl Competition against 7 other schools, Bruning Davenport, David City, Diller Odell, Meridian, Osceola, Sutton and Thayer Central. Our 5th grade team, consisting of Adeline Blatny, Brody Schmidt, Izzy Ausk, Heidi Ramos, and Landon McBride took 2nd place in the 5th grade division with a 5 – 2 record. The 6th grade team made up of Blake Starr, Brook Tatro, Lily Ausk, Jakolbe Atkins, and Toby Julin-McCleary took 1st place going undefeated in competition! The Club is coached by Nicole Comer and Angie Judd. Competing in competitions like this couldn’t happen without the support of our entire Quiz Bowl Club! Congratulations to all of the members of the Soaring Jeffs Quiz Bowl Club!
