Kindergarten Class Learns About Shadows

Mrs. Moody’s Kindergarten Class has been learning about shadows. We investigated the questions, “How are shadows made?”, “Does our shadow change based on the time of day?” and, “Does everything make a shadow as long as it is blocking light”. We took our research outside and traced our shadows with sidewalk chalk. We also found other objects that created shadows and traced their shadows with chalk as well.

Britt McCardle Receives the Jeffs’ Best Award!

The Jeffs’ Best Award was created by the Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education to highlight and celebrate the great work of our staff. On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to congratulate Britt McCardle, Central Paraprofessional, as the recipient of the March Jeffs’ Best Award!

Brittany is incredibly friendly to the children and parents. She helps every morning with the preschool drop off and my daughter absolutely loves her!
Brittany always greets the kids with a smile and makes them feel like they have a friend in her. I’ve known Brittany for years and seeing her working at Central and doing so well with the
kids is incredibly awesome to me. I feel that she is very deserving of this award.

Congratulations, Britt!

Dental Health Month

The kindergarten class had a  dental presentation with Dr. Spahr and Kenidee Miller, RDH from Smile Designs. February is National Dental Health Month, and they went over good oral hygiene with the kindergarten classes.  Elementary students were given a free toothbrush from Dr. Spahr.

World Read Aloud Day – February 3rd!

“Reading is better when we do it together.  Did you know that reading aloud every day puts kids ahead by one year, no matter their background!” ..litworld.org
Jefferson’s sixth grade students celebrated World Read Aloud Day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week and “shared the love” of reading with Kindergarten and 1st grade students at Central.

When It’s Snowing, There’s Only One Thing to Do

In Art class first graders listened to the picturebook Snowballs, by Lois Ehlert, and were inspired to create their own snowman collages. On the first day, students painted beautiful watercolor resist backgrounds (using white crayons to draw snowflakes) and sprinkled the wet, painted paper with salt which created a speckled texture. The next class period students chose from a variety of materials to make their own unique snowman. As you can see, the boys and girls were very proud of their masterpieces!

Valentines for Veterans

Some valentine love might be needed even more this year than in past years. As they approach Valentine’s Day, students aren’t forgetting the men and women who serve our country. They have been hard at work creating Valentines for Veterans.  This is a special anniversary year for the Valentines for Veterans project…the 10th anniversary. The program has grown from approximately 400 the first year to over 1,400 last year.
The veterans are always very appreciative of receiving the valentines.

How To Catch an Elf

Students in Mrs. Schroeder’s class read the book, ‘How To Catch an Elf’. They then worked together in groups and used their creative minds to build their own elf traps. Later, they took a walk around the school to set their traps. The following day, they went on an “elf hunt” to check their traps. They caught an elf in every trap. One of them was even Mrs. Arnold’s elf that watches her 2nd grade class!
