Cracking a Coconut in Reading!

This first grade reading group recently read a series of stories about two sisters who were stranded on a deserted island and had to survive by eating fish, coconuts and bananas. In a parallel story they read a nonfiction passage about the layers of a coconut and where coconuts grow. To understand how hard it was for the characters to crack a coconut, these students got to experience it themselves. Using a hammer, each student took turns hitting a coconut until it was in pieces. They identified the different layers of the coconut and had the option to sample the coconut milk and coconut meat. It’s a good thing they weren’t depending on the coconut for survival because only one student liked the taste!

Fairbury Farm to School

Fairbury has been fortunate to have several donations of pork and beef throughout the last two years.    The DeBoer families donated two beef to kick off our Farm to School Program in the spring of 2018. Since that time, we have had more beef and pork donated by several generous families.  We have also had many monetary donations. Monetary donations are used to help defray the cost of processing the beef and pork. In addition to pork and beef, in the fall we have had donations of fresh garden produce.

The Farm to School Program is great for our school.  It gives our students pride in where there food is produced.  They get fresh from the farm foods. The cafeteria staff does a great job in serving the foods in creative and tasty dishes.   Some of the beef dishes served have been, fresh 100% ¼ lb. hamburgers, roast beef, beef and noodles and beef enchiladas. The variety of pork dishes include: Pork Tetrazinni, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Southwest BBQ Pork Pizza, Roast Pork Loin and Pork Tacos.  Fresh salsa was prepared with some of the locally produced and donated tomatoes and peppers. Fresh cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes have enhanced flavor and color of the fruit/vegetable bars. Nothing is better than a home-grown tomato. Yum…

Donations are accepted throughout the school year.  Please contact Mr. Grizzle at the district office (402-729-6104) for more information on donating beef or pork.   For donations of fresh produce, please call Jane Rhine at the high school cafeteria, (402-300-3094)

A big thank you goes out to everyone for all generous donations. Our students really appreciate all the fresh local food.

Elementary Family Night 2019

Central & Jefferson Family Night, Give the Gift of Reading was held Thursday, February, 28th.  Families gathered at the Fairbury Jr/Sr High School to enjoy a pancake supper sponsored by the Fairbury Kiwanis.  Teachers, staff and volunteers operated many Dr. Seuss-based activities.  Students and families enjoyed playing games, making arts & crafts, taking silly Seuss pictures and listening to guest readers.  Each PreK-6 student received a free book from the Kiwanis pancake feed.  It was a SEUSS-tastic night!

Students Celebrate the Love of Reading

Sixth graders from Jefferson Intermediate traveled to CentralElementary to “share the love of reading” with Kindergarten students.  Reading aloud improves listening and vocabulary skills.  It’s a fun, easy way to connect with people of all ages.

Two Schools One Cause

The 5th Annual Gray Out was held at Fairbury Public Schools on December 4th during the Fairbury vs Superior boys and girls basketball games. This was the 3rd year that Fairbury has teamed up with Superior to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes.

The IN Group, a Type 1 Diabetic support group for students, parents and community members, kicks off the event by collecting sponsors. This year the group had 53 sponsors with a total of $1525 raised. The sponsor money will be used for diabetes camp scholarships and left over funds will be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk next September.

The group also sells gray t-shirts for the event. The proceeds from the t-shirt sales goes directly to JDRF. This year a check for $681 was presented to Laura Eberly, JDRF representative during halftime of the boys basketball game.

“JDRF is so grateful for the support of Fairbury and Superior’s students and communities that come together to raise awareness and funds for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) research,” stated Eberly. “The Annual Gray Out is an event that has been paving the way for other schools and communities in Nebraska and across the country getting them involved to make a difference in T1D’s lives.”

Eberly explained, “T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone our bodies require to stay alive. T1D can strike at any age and causes a lifelong dependence on injected or infused insulin. The disease carries the constant worry of life-threatening complications and requires intensive, ongoing supervision. There is no reprieve, there are no days off, and there is no cure.”

Check presentation during halftime of the Varsity Boys game.

This year the Fairbury FCCLA tried something new, a 50/50 raffle with a twist. Two tickets were drawn during each varsity game halftime and each winner was given two chances to make a half court shot. During the boys halftime none of the 4 ticket holders were able to make the half court shot so they played a fast and furious game of knock-out. Austin Novotny won the game and generously gave his share to JDRF for them to receive 100% of the raffle.

“Because of Fairbury and Superior’s success with the Annual Gray Out we are getting closer to living in a world without T1D.  Thank you so much for all your support!” added Eberly.

Turkey Disguise

The students in Mrs. Wanamaker’s class were each given a Turkey to disguise with their parents so it will not be eaten on Thanksgiving Day.  Once all the turkeys were back, the students had to give an oral presentation to the others in the classroom about their Turkey and tell what kind of a disguise they gave them.  Each one was so excited to share their ideas with the class.   Next, the students had to write a 4 sentences paragraph about their Turkeys Disguise.

Central Elementary Students Celebrate Veterans Day

On Monday, November 12, 2018 students and visitors at Central Elementary celebrated Veterans Day. The VFW Color Guard presented the flag in the Cafegymtorium where students said the Pledge of Allegiance, watched patriotic videos, and sang songs. Students listened to veterans introduce themselves and talk about their services. High school students Zane, Isaac, and Konnor performed “Call to Colors” for the elementary students. Students made artwork that was displayed throughout the building and honorary stars were hung near the office.

FPS Students Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Central and Jefferson students celebrated Red Ribbon Week Oct. 29-Nov. 2. Red Ribbon Week promotes and encourages students to make healthy choices and choose to be drug free. This year’s theme is, Life is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free! To help students be the best they can be, our school partnered with Jefferson Community Health and Life and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Students enjoyed learning about food and nutrition, heart health, dangers of smoking, poison control, crosswalk safety and a fitness activity.
