Band Successful at FHS
The Fairbury Bands have had a successful start to the 2018-19 school year. On Saturday, August 4, the junior and senior high bands concluded their summer camp by marching in the Wilber Czech Days parade, where the band placed 1st in the bands division! This past weekend, the band participated in the Yorkfest Parade, winning second place and a trophy. The band will be appearing in the Homecoming Parade Friday, September 14, as well as the Melody Round-Up Parade in Hastings on September 22, and Harvest of Harmony in Grand Island on October 6.
Preschool Students as Doctors and Nurses
This year in preschool, students in Mrs. Humphrey’s class have been learning a new classroom job. The medical person is an important part of our day. Each week two students get to decide if they will be a doctor or a nurse. Then during the day when a classmate has a small scratch, bump or even a bug bite the medical team helps them by placing a band aide on the injured body part. The students love this job. They are learning so many things: compassion, caring for others, being responsible with their trash, fine motor skills to open a band aide and how to ask others where it hurts.
It has been a great way to incorporate real world practices in our classroom. The students take such pride and joy in helping their friends.
Acting Out Math
Miss Mohr’s kindergarten math class was acting out story problems using bears. Students got to make up their own stories such as, “Four bears went to the park. Then two bears went home. How many bears are at the park now?” “Three bears were at the park. Two more bears came to the park. Now there are five bears at the park.” They were also practicing counting with one-to-one correspondence. Students had fun “Acting Out” math for a real life math experience.
Building a Tower of Books
CHANCE kids have been fostering the joy of reading by building a Book Tower – One book made for each book read!

Construction Tech Rebuild
Students in Construction Tech are busy with their first project of the year. In between rain storms and high winds, the boys have been busy at the home of Taylor Biehl taking down an existing garden shed. Upon inspection of the building, the students came to the conclusion that much of the frame of the building was still usable, so they decided to replace any rotten boards with new ones. The bottom sill plate was replaced with a green treated one and the siding and roofing will also be replaced. The building may even get some overhang to help make the siding last longer.
Plans include to put a new roof on and shingle the building to match the house. The boys are having a good time with the demolition phase. I am sure that the rebuilding phase will be rewarding as well. There is a lot of construction going on in Fairbury like our new pool and the “H” street project. The weather certainly has been an issue with all projects around town weather big or small. Included are some pictures that were taken while the students were removing the battered materials. Friday Flashlight Read It, Sing It
On Fridays students in Mrs. Shinn’s classroom enjoy turning off the lights and using their flashlights to read and sing some of their favorite motivational and educational songs.
