First Time Ever – Reading Rally!

Just what is Reading Rally you ask?! Reading Classic was a literacy event sponsored by the Nebraska State Reading Association. Sadly, last year the Reading Classic competition came to an end.

Under the guidance of Annette Weise from ESU 5, the local ESU 5 Schools have started Reading Rally. Reading Rally will have two different divisions – Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6. Reading Rally’s goal is to promote a love of reading. Schools within the ESU 5 area have formed lists of books for the two divisions. These lists have been offered to students at Jefferson Intermediate.

There are many wonderful books. The ESU 5 Schools selected Golden Sower, Newberrys, Caldecotts, and other award-winning books for the Reading Rally lists.

Students that make the team will meet weekly for meetings as provided in the schedule below. At practice, students bring questions that they have written about the books they have read. We practice these questions; along with other questions about the books on the lists. Practices are a time to talk about the books we are reading and to practice for the real competition.

The competition will be held on April 17 at ESU 5. We are still working on the times. There will only be one competition with ESU 5 Schools this year.

Grades 3-4
Grades 5-6

The first meeting will be Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at the Jefferson Intermediate Library. The meeting will begin at 3:25 and end at 4:00. We will review the expectations of being part of this team. Student/Parent Contracts will be given and must be returned by December 6, 2022. Ready Rally practice question forms will be available for students.

I look forward to working with Jefferson Intermediate’s students in our first year with Reading Rally!

Veterans Day Celebrated at Central Elementary

Central Elementary celebrated Veterans Day with a “Rally ‘Round the Flag”.  The  VFW Color Guard presented and raised the flags.  Cora Tatro and Trinity Hotchkiss presented a “Call to Colors” and all of the students recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Grizzle gave a morni8ng welcome.  The 2nd-grade students sang the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful.
After the Veterans in attendance introduced themselves, Ms. Schoenrock lead 1st graders in singing My Country Tis of Thee.  The Kindergarten sang the song  “Grand Ole Flag”.  Mrs. Smith, Central Elementary Principal, concluded the program.  Along with the wonderful program, students spent the week decorating the school in celebration of Veterans Day.

Christy Lucking Receives the Jeffs’ Best Award!

The Jeffs’ Best Award was created by the Fairbury Public Schools Board of Education to highlight and celebrate the great work of our staff. On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to congratulate Christy Lucking, as the recipient of the November Jeffs’ Best Award!  Christy is the elementary guidance counselor, and this is her nomination statement:

I am nominating Christy Lucking as Jeff’s Best because she truly embodies what it is to represent our school as one of the finest educators I have ever worked with. She is confidential and professional and works incredibly hard to do a job that really should be done by 2 people. Our students need Mrs.Lucking and her patience and caring. She goes above and beyond what is expected of her every day. She is someone I trust, someone I look to for guidance, and someone who absolutely wants the best for our students. She is a TRUE Jeff having grown up here in Fairbury and graduating as a Jeff. Her work ethic is unmatched. I feel so incredibly lucky to have a colleague like her. Our students are blessed to have her in their lives.

Congratulations Christy!
