Mental Health Awareness Week Celebrated at FPS

Fairbury Public Schools celebrated their 2nd Annual Mental Health Awareness Week from October 1st, 2023 to October 7th, 2023. The week was kicked off at the high school by a keynote presentation from DeMoine Adams, former Nebraska Cornhusker football player and current CEO of Teammates.

DeMoine stressed the importance of developing a growth mindset in the students and overcoming adversity. There were several activities held at all three school buildings throughout the week to promote mental health awareness including: gratitude notes, positive affirmation coloring pages, mental wellness resource guides, healthy snacks, sidewalk chalk, read aloud about being grateful, and a bingo game to promote spreading kindness.

Students and community members were provided an opportunity to purchase t-shirts with the phrase “I’m So Glad You’re Here” and wear them to support the Fairbury volleyball team in their triangular volleyball match on Thursday of the week. Overall, it was another successful week and something that the students and staff appear to look forward to every year.

Fourth Grade Field Trip to Discover Pioneer Life at Filley Stone Barn and Homestead National Monument

As part of learning about Pioneers, Fourth grade got to spend the morning at Filley Stone Barn. The students were able to pick corn, shell corn, go on a wagon ride, saw logs, watch a marble being made, and watch a blacksmith.

In the afternoon, 4th graders traveled to the Homestead. There we were able to sew a quilt square, spin wool to make yarn, dip candles, learn about farm implements, make a cornhusk doll and learn how clothes were washed during the pioneer times. We had a great day!
