First Graders Study Astronomy

Picture of First Graders

Within our new reading curriculum (CKLA), our first grade students were introduced to Astronomy. We spent two weeks learning about the first trips to outer space, how the planets were formed, what it feels like to be in outer space, and the order of the eight planets. Miss Lassek’s first graders spent two days sharing what they learned about each planet while building their own diorama. The students began by painting their boxes to match the color of the night sky. They continued to create their diorama by adding balls of gas (stars and the sun) to spread heat and light to the planets. Each student then began to add details to their planets, specifically adding rings to Saturn, a red spot on Jupiter (which happens to be a storm), and adding green to Earth to represent the land. To finish the dioramas, the students and teachers hung the planets in the correct order. Miss Lassek’s first graders all agree that Astronomy is the most interesting unit we’ve learned about so far!

Preschool Celebrates the Season

This past week in Mrs. Stanton’s classroom, preschoolers were able to experience what it would be like to be at Santa’s workshop! They were busy making toys at the workshop, wrapping gifts they had built, making cookies and candy at Santa’s bake shop, decorating the tree, and writing letters they could mail to Santa. Other fun things we did this week included playing jingle bell music, fixing reindeer food, and creating our very own gingerbread houses! We ended our week with a holiday party, movie, and a cookie from the PTA.

Family Fun Night

Thursday, families received the opportunity to build a santa cocoa, play snoopy bingo, dance to Christmas music, make an ornament, hula hoop, ride scooters, play with a parachute, eat chili or chicken noodle soup  and cinnamon rolls. JCHL partnered with Central and Jefferson to provide physical activities from physical therapists and a medical student all in one night. The evening came to an end after families and staff hopped on a bus to ride to Heritage, Gardenside and Cedar Wood to sing Christmas Carols to residents. It was a  fantastic fun night for all.

FBLA visits fourth graders, discusses American Enterprise Week

by

To raise awareness of American Enterprise Week, members of the FHS FBLA organization visited the fourth graders at Jefferson, on November 12th. Next week the fourth graders will be coming up to the high school to make cookies for the FHS students to buy. American Enterprise Week is about the freedom to start and run any business we choose.

Junior Abby Judd bids off a sucker for an example of American Enterprise Week. In this game they gave the kids paper money and had an auction on how much money they would give for the sucker. Photo by C. York
Sophomore Ethan Smith hands out surveys to the kids to find out what cookies are their favorite. Next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the 4th grade students and FBLA members will be making and selling cookies. Photo by C. York
Senior Jaelle Johnson hands out coloring sheets for the kids to color. They will be hanging them up in the hallways to advertise how they will be selling cookies next week. Photo by C. York

Each cookie is worth 50 cents. Don’t forget to bring your money to school next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to buy cookies and support the FBLA organization.

Construction Class Gives Back

The students in Mr. Scott’s Construction class had the opportunity to help unpackage all the playground equipment for the new Central playground. They all pitched in and got a lot done in a short order. There were many other people there from the community as well.  It just happened that Mr. Scott’s class was between jobs so it all worked out for the day.  They were glad to help do something more for the community.  Thanks to all that helped out.  I am sure the younger kids are all excited they are getting a new playground.  The boys were talking about when they were young and how they really enjoyed recess.

First Graders Learn About Folktales

The First Graders at Central School had several high school students from Mr. Martin’s first period class read with them. They had been focusing on the literary genre of folktales in their CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) Unit.
The high school students read different variations of Cinderella, Tom Thumb, Little Red Riding Hood, and many other folktales that were in our library.  After reading books with the high schoolers, the first grade students went back to their classrooms to create their own Cinderella Castles using building blocks. It was great having older students spend time with the first graders of Central School.
